The one constraint
Most revenue problems are one problem wearing five costumes. How to find the constraint that is actually capping margin — and why fixing anything else is theatre.
Every business we walk into has a list. Marketing needs sharpening, the CRM is a mess, the estimators are slow, the reps discount too early, the follow-up is patchy. All of it is true. Almost none of it is the constraint.
A constraint is the single thing that, if it stayed exactly as it is, would cap margin no matter how well everything else ran. It is rarely the loudest problem. It is usually the one nobody has permission to name.
Finding it takes three passes: where deals die, what they were worth, and what the business did differently on the ones it won. The pattern shows up quickly once you stop averaging everything together.
The discipline is in what you do next. Fixing five things at once means you never learn which one mattered. Fix the constraint, hold everything else steady, and the number moves in a way you can point at.
Run the numbers. Know the gap.
