Why discounting is a pricing failure, not a sales one
When the only lever a team has is price, the deal was lost long before the negotiation. What to build upstream so the number holds.
Discounting gets blamed on sales teams. It is almost always a failure further upstream: the offer was never framed around scope and risk, so price became the only variable left on the table.
In project markets the buyer is managing exposure, not shopping. If your quote does not visibly reduce their risk, the cheapest number wins by default.
The fix is structural. Price around what the client is actually buying — certainty of delivery, fewer variations, a shorter path to approval — and give the team language that holds under pressure.
Teams that rebuild pricing this way stop negotiating on the last page and start negotiating on the first.
Run the numbers. Know the gap.
